DescriptionCurrently, youth unemployment rate in Kenya is 35% whilst 80% of unemployed Kenyans are below 35 years. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the highest proportion of the unemployed has remained between ages 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 with respective unemployment rates of 22.8 and 21.7 per cent. This is happening as the world records a youth bulge. To tackle this in my community, I mobilized 15 youths aged 20- 35 years and registered Fit for Future youth group with an aim of improving their economic livelihoods through income generating activities based on Decent Work. My dream is to create jobs and improve the livelihoods for the members, their families, and the community. We secured a seedbed where we have planted 8, 000 Hass and Fuerte Avocado seedlings that we will sell to farmers at a subsidized price of Ksh 200 per seedling at the onset of short rains in April 2022. Our challenge is that we do not have cash for grafting the 8,000 seedling. I anticipate a profit of Ksh 1.5 million and buy 15 motorbikes for every member. A motorbike makes Ksh 400 a day. Ksh 50 will go back to the group and support in operations. Members will also be trained on financial literacy and savings and credit management to help them manage their motorbikes. A properly watered avocado tree should yield 1000 fruits per year. With one fruit going for Ksh 8, this translates into Ksh 8000 per tree. A farmer with 30 trees will earn Ksh 240,000 annually. We will also improve the forest cover of the country with additional 10,00 trees as well as supporting the community achieve some health indicators through the rich nutrients from avocados.
DescriptionWe deal with hydroponic fodder systems that helps cut down production cost by 50%
DescriptionMwewe farms is as a result of dwindling monetary return of coffee as a cash crop in my region caused by poor seedlings, mismanagement by government entities. This has led to loss of livelihoods to the farmers. To mitigate this cash flow I ventured into avocado, macadamia nuts and bee keeping as an alternative to coffee farming. This farming does not require a lot of input from the farmers in terms of labour, inputs and the global demand for them is on an upward trend. The trees takes three to Five years to mature as compared to coffee which takes seven years to mature. Am advocating for good health, income generation and the uptake of organic farming. We want to make use of the unutilized large portions of land held by farmers not currently farming coffee. We also want to discourage rural urban migration among the energetic youth.

DescriptionI am a mixed cropping farmer specialising in potato, peas, beans, maize and carrots farming. Over the years, I have realized that most farmers are at the mercy of brokers in two ways; 1. Getting their produce to market 2. Getting fair prices My idea is to provide farmers with an alternative market through value addition. By setting up storage and processing facilities in Nyandarua, where I farm, farmers will sell their produce to me at competitive prices and I turn will process potatoes for crisps and chips to sell to restaurants. I will also blast chill peas and carrots for sale in the local market making these seasonal items available all year round. Not only will my industry help farmers get better prices, I will also provide employment on casual and full-time basis.

DescriptionTeachAManToFish: Sustainable approaches to tackling poverty One of the reasons overseas development projects often fail to have a long term impact on poverty despite their success in the short-term is because insufficient attention is paid to their sustainability. At the heart of Teach A Man To Fish’s approach is a focus on achieving financial and operational sustainability. Financial sustainability is incorporated into project design – as part of the education process students produce actual goods. The income generated from the sale of these products is used to cover teaching and production costs. Operational sustainability is ensured by working within the framework of existing organisational structures. By partnering with well established agricultural schools we can be confident that long term impact does not depend on one or two key individuals but is a result of institutionalisation of successful practices.
DescriptionWe run a social enterprise that connects artisans with markets through our online shop www.artisanduk.com, and digital presence as a whole. We are passionate about promoting locally handcrafted products, first to our very own - Kenyans. This is a break from the norm because for a long time, amazing products made in Kenya have not been enjoyed at home. We are also excited about expanding markets abroad in ways that really benefit artisans - both to increase their skills and income. Relationships with artisans are at the core of our enterprise - and these relationships have helped us to innovate in partnership with them, to improve an existing product, and to foster collaborations that create new opportunities for different stakeholders. We see many possibilities to better serve artisans so that they can grow their sales footprint in the global handmade goods market.

DescriptionI am Nigerian Barter Natural Resources is an Agri-tech startup fuelled by our mission to ensure that sustainable farming and cultivation leads the fight against hunger. We provide creative and technological solutions to one of our world’s greatest challenges. We build sophisticated software applications coupled with highly engaging content to ensure our farmers are provided the support they need to maximise their yields. We are collaborative in our approach and empower both farmers and consumers to reach that goal by bridging the gap. Our software utilises farmer data and merges it with external data (weather, soil, transport and demand metrics) to create bespoke support and recommendations to help farmers to scale their operations from subsistence farming to commercial farming. At the heart of our solutions are machine learning algorithms that produce highly accurate outputs including our flagship local virtual co-operative model. The model explained… BARTER aggregates supply from smallholder low-capacity domestic farmers by creating virtual co-operatives. Our software clusters farmers together to achieve the supply scale only achieved by large co-operatives to meet the desperate demand for high-quality domestic produce. Our business development managers collect farmer data onto our database. Our machine learning algorithms create profiles based on automated risk assessments and yield forecasts. We use these profiles to virtually cluster farmers together and then match the virtual co-operative to commercial contracts placed on our platform, consequently providing SMEs and large corporates with a one-stop-shop to procure their agricultural raw materials at scale. We provide several extension services for our farmers including community training, inputs including improved seeds and fertilizer, family support (mental health and wellness), job opportunities, financial inclusion programmes and mechanization services.

DescriptionI have and idea of setting up a business in pig farming.. I did a market research that if one breeds pigs that of cross variety such like large white and sell them to the market out their will fetch you a minimum of kshs 45000 and if it's the local breeds they sell up to a maximum of kshs 18000 so this business is demanding for the reasons of many consumers have grown and also this consumers prefer using pork for its tender meat and others go to a level of turning to add value on this pork and make sausages and supply it at large...hence this is the best way to go...The challenge that I have is starting capital to purchase a well sized land and construct housing and pig pens to start this business and also cater their feeds for pigs needs balanced diet just like human being do for a better health..so am positive through this noble platform I pray that my idea to be in consideration so as this will create employment and inspire other youths and the community at large who have the mentality that in Kenya we do still have white collar jobs with better pay...and this is the best way to go and I am a huny percent sure that once am able to achieve this then the guarantee of many more people to join Agribusiness will make many of us independent and run out of this idea called free handouts

DescriptionGOAT REARING FREE RANGE Buck/Billy (Beberu) – male goat Doe – female goat Kid- baby goat Goats can be reared for meat or milk (dairy) Goats should be dewormed every 3 months and be given tetanus shots a month after birth Lactating Does should be prevent against contacting mastitis. Types of goats that can be reared locally; Small east African goat( common breed) Galla goat Anglo Nubian goat German Alpine goat Boer goat Toggenberg Saanen goat SMALL EAST AFRICAN GOAT (COMMON BREED)/ GALLA GOAT Housing & general upkeep For free range goats we can decide to build a wood/brick house but the walls will not go all the way to the top. Then enhance it with wire mesh towards the top to ensure free circulation of air. Then we use a metallic or wooden door depending on our budget. For free range goats we can have the resting area only although we can decide to build a resting and feeding area just whenever we want to feed them on supplements. Their resting area should be free from dampness & noise and have proper ventilation. The shed should be cleaned twice a week and the refuse can be used as manure also. It is advisable for a farmer to choose the bucks that will be used to service the does and then castrate the remaining bucks so as to ensure their fast growth and weight gain. Goats can be kept on a free range basis or in zero grazing units. For our case I suggest that we use the free range system as it is cheap and affordable as there is enough land for the goats to forage. The gestation period of a goat is around 150 days If Does are well fed during the heat cycle, before and after mating, they are more likely to give birth to twins or triplets. The heat cycle is between 18 to 24 days A does is usually ready to kid for the first time between 13 – 17 months after it has been born. 1 buck can service up to 25 does in one mating season PURCHASE 1 small goat goes for between kshs 2, 000/= to kshs 4, 000/= 1 adult goat goes for between kshs 4, 000/= to kshs 7, 000/= Adult bucks are more expensive as compared to the females NB: THE ABOVE MENTIONED PRICES DIFFER WITH DIFFERENT SELLERS If we buy the goats in bulk/plenty it will be easier to get them at a cheaper price. SELLING An adult goat for between kshs 4, 000/= to kshs 7, 000/= depending on its size and where or whom you are selling to. IN THE ALTERNATIVE We can also venture in selling our own goats in our own butcheries or sell goat milk; 1 litre of goat milk goes for kshs 90/= Come to think of it on average, an adult goat ready for sale weighs between 45 kgs – 160 kgs depending on how well fed they are or the breed. In Kenya, as per the scale of the Kenya Meat Processors (2020) 1 kg mutton - 560/= Mutton leg whole - 650/= Mutton shoulder whole - 600/= Mutton loin - 560/= This means that instead of getting kshs 4, 000/= from the sale of one whole goat, we can get kshs 25, 200/= from one goat if we sell it at our own butchery. That is; 45kg x 560 = 25, 200/= x 30 goats =kshs 756, 000/=

DescriptionThe proposed idea is to introduce a complete one stop shop for all the fresh farm produce all as either raw materials, partially processed and final products ready for consumption. The proposed idea will ensure that there is a complete value chain for the farmers as well as final consumers where we can control the input at the farm, the farming process, harvesting to avoid losses and contamination, safe handling and transport of agricultural products, safe handling of food in the retailing facilities, safe packaging and repackaging of the food items. The retail will offer a one stop experience for the customers with guaranteed hygiene standards. The proposed idea is to incorporate farmers who will be listed and guided on the process of producing their farm produce to the required standards. The agreeable mode of working will be contract farming to ensure mutual benefit and sustainability of the plan. For a start the business will not be able to avail inputs for the farmers but as time goes by or with partners coming on board the business’ plan is to list farmers who will be provided with inputs to be deducted when the payments of the farm produce is being remitted. This will encourage more youths and women to venture into agribusiness whose main challenge is source of capital and market plan for the produce since most agricultural products are perishable in nature. The idea is a very new idea which has not been implemented, however competition is expected from stand-alone players such as cereals shops, hotels, small bakeries, butcheries and existing supermarkets. While this is put into consideration, the business will achieve a competitive advantage over the rest by providing a one stop shop experience for agricultural products with quality and hygiene well guaranteed.

DescriptionIt is time for all of us to think about the long-term future of agricultural and food production. How can we develop a sustainable food and agriculture that is far better integrated within the world economy at large and meet the new needs of health, environment, climate and affordability The aim of this vision paper is to discuss the main principles of a circular food system, with a special emphasis on plant and animal production. Circularity in plant and animal production assumes that plant biomass is the basis of our food system, and should be used primarily to produce human food; that by-products from food production, processing and consumption are reused or recycled into the food system; and that we make the most efficient use of animals by using them to unlock biomass inedible for humans into valuable food, manure and ecosystem services An info graphic, which I have designed for the project to use for promotion purposes, is shown on the next page and introduces the aquatic fern, Azolla. This plant has several species, indigenous to different areas globally and is already widely used to manage the ecosystem within rice paddies. The plant is relatively easy to manage for production and the commodity currently in use is the education process in managing and utilizing it effectively. This is the fundamental basis of the project as it stands currently The plant utilises a symbiotic relationship with a cyanobacteria call Anabaena Azollae, which facilitates the highly efficient fixing of nutrients, particularly nitrogen, which increases the nutritional value of the plant significantly when compared to other food plants

DescriptionI have grown up in an environment of farming French beans and it is an idea I have been with since I was young. This is an idea I really want to build an agriculture empire to help my community with offering employment, food and eradicating poverty. Eventually, I am planning to start an exporting agency and recruit other farmers to supply French beans for export. My long term vision is to establish an exporting company for the French beans and other fresh agricultural produce in Africa. French beans are one of the crops dominating Kenya’s export market. Growing these beans requires a lot of dedication and capital especially if you are targeting the high season. There are four major stages which are highly sensitive in the growing process; germination, flowering, fruiting and lastly harvesting. My business is solving the issue of unemployment, hunger and poverty. French beans farming has been a great source of employment and income in my community since I was young. For example: 1. Employment issue- I will need labourers throughout the process from land preparation to the harvesting stage. For 1 acre of land, I usually employ 30 employees who are constantly working through the whole process. 3.No Poverty- Most of the families in Africa do farming to earn a living. Through French beans farming the business will offer may family a source of income and improve their stands of living. 2. Zero Hunger- French been is consumable.

I hope to continue planting and taking care of my produce organically without any pesticides and all. This might take long but if done over and over again it will contribute to less and less people having to eat inorganic foods and in the long run reduce all this lifestyle diseases. I strongly believe that our food should be our medicine.

DescriptionBypork is a crowd farming initiative tackling protein deficiency in Africa by engaging Africans in Pig farming. HOW BYPORK STARTED I was operating a small pig farm in 2019 & stumbled upon the pieces of research shared in 'the problem' section below. I believe it presents an opportunity to build a scalable business with direct impact on the underprivileged. THE PROBLEM: We are solving the protein deficiency (PD) problem in Africa. PD is the cause of diseases such as Kwashiokor, skin swelling (oedema), stunted growth, organ failure etc. According to a 2018 study by healthline.com, Over 1billion people suffers protein deficiency. It also stated that 30% of Children in Central Africa suffer protein. Unfortunately, it gets worse, Ncbi.nlm.nih.gov reports that 13-15M children under 5 in Sub Saharan Africa die every year to Kwashiorkor & Protein deficiency related diseases. OPPORTUNITY: According to a 2017 report by euromeatnews.com, $3B worth of pork products was consumed in Nigeria & Ghana alone, yet $2.4B of it was imported. I believe that by farming pigs in a scalable model, it presents us an opportunity to capture value & to give back protein(pork) to those most vulnerable. SOLUTION: We created a simple platform that allows people invest & earn from pig farming using just their smartphones ( https:www.bypork.com ). With their investments, we do farm work, sell pigs at maturity & gift 10% worth of their investments in pork to an underprivileged family or an orphanage.

DescriptionI have always loved to do farming. A year ago, I established the ideal location to do the farming and laid out the business plan. The only limitation I had was the start up capital for the project to kick off. I am employed, but since the country was hit by COVID-19 pandemic, there were salary deductions which have not been restored to date. This trigered me into thinking of starting up a side hustle that can give me an extra income. The idea of doing agriculture came up but it has not yet materialized due to lack of capital.
DescriptionNyungu Afrika is a social and environmental impact start-up whose vision is to eradicate period poverty in Kenya and beyond by leveraging on a circular design model. Our mission is to promote gender equality and enable access of affordable , eco-friendly, and high-quality pads to women and girls at the bottom of the pyramid and including them at all stages of the value chain—as entrepreneurs or employees in production, distributors, health educators, and consumers. Sanitary pads are basic needs used by women and girls for an average of 30 years from the onset of puberty. The majority of the entire human workforce is female and the penetration of menstrual products barely meets the need of this deprived and ever-growing market valued to reach 28 Billion dollars by 2022. 65% of women in Kenya are forced to choose between buying food or sanitary pads during menstruation, trading sex for pads, missing or dropping out of school, while others use cartons, blankets, and tissue papers which are hazardous and have health risks. In addition, most disposable pads are manufactured with dozens of chemicals and fall under the category of single-use plastics thus causing harmful health effects to women, chemical and air pollution in the environment. Nyungu Afrika was born out of the need to eliminate the harmful effects pads have on women, the environment and decentralize the pad manufacturing industry by integrating a circular economy model. We have achieved this by recycling and ethically manufacturing a patented bio-degradable, high-quality, and non-toxic disposable pad that delivers on comfort and performance using underutilized agricultural waste pineapple leaves and corn husk fibers that are usually burnt or left to rot after harvest. The waste produced can be re-recycled into biogas, soil manure and animal feeds.

DescriptionGolden goose berry is among the 7 crop which is untapped currently in Kenya, the crop can produce a kilogram of fruits per season which goes for KSH 300 and the harveste fruits can be also sold in form of dried fruits, golden goose berries jam, eaten with pan cakes, juices ,baked cakes it has large market which needed to be tapped both local and export. The plant takes 3 months to mature under good management, well drain soils, exposure of sunlight, enough water and good plant routine it should be able to produce for a period of 2 years although it's recommend not to use fertilizer during plants growth to minimize more forage than flowers,it requires little water uptake only during flowering to avoid abortion of flowers hence it does well under hostile climate. It is estimated that an arce of land will take up 2500 plants those plants going for KSH 100 per seedlings, organic manure half a tonne per arce KSH 1000 and 2500 litres of water in 2 seasons. A plant population of 2500 will give a return of 750000 Ksh minus 20% of investment and an arce of land will employ 5 different groups of people that is the farmer, land labourer, Harvester, and the grader and packaging worker only at farm level. It has many benefits both in the body of human from immunity boost to good teeth formation in babies and also the minerals and vitamin in it makes it highly recommend by doctors.
